That’s the name we have for our version of a blazer or a sport coat. It functions similar to both and “soft” is both intentional and descriptive. Soft covers a few things. First, like in most styles we offer, it’s extremely soft and comfortable to wear. The shoulders have a soft construction, meaning there’s minimal padding and lining so they fall naturally. Generally speaking, these are meant to sit on the softer, more casual end of the spectrum. It’s a subtle detail, but that’s why we chose patch pockets for all designs, as opposed to flap pockets that you’d find on more formal designs or in suiting.
You’ll see similar details throughout all of our Crown Crafted soft jackets. Most are noted in each product description. If you’re curious, there are a few things that have a story behind them. The chest pocket in each is in a “Barchetta” shape. That means “little boat” in Italian. It looks roughly like a traditional sailboat hull, and it’s a hallmark of fine tailoring in the southern Italian tradition. Similarly, you might notice what’s called “pick stitching” on the jacket, particularly on the lapels. We use a half canopy in our linings, which sits in a sort of butterfly shape across the shoulders and upper back. With lined sleeves, this helps to make them easy to put on and off and accentuates the drape that’s natural to the special fabrics themselves. That lining setup also helps the jackets to wear lightly, even the ones with heavier, more wintry cloths. A double vent in the back gives a traditional look and furthers comfort and freedom of movement.
Fit, feel and detailing are definitely important. We strive to make everything we design fit perfectly, but we have a long history with soft jackets and because the specs are very consistent, we’ve spent years and years getting them right. Fabric, or “cloth”, as it’s called in this world, is the real hero. We partner with the finest Italian mill to select these each season. There are faithful compositions like wool/silk/linen that we always revisit in new colors and patterns, and entirely new textures and fabrications that we develop and shape.
It’s good to think about your needs up front, and make sure you have the essentials covered from the beginning. A quality navy blazer is always the perfect starting point, and our Excursionist Flex blazer has been a foundational style in our line for many years. Because of its lighter weight and open weave, it works well in all seasons—by itself in the warmer months and over a light sweater when it’s cooler. It also works especially well as a travel companion, from the way it comes out of a suitcase looking fresh to its many pockets. From there, rounding out your wardrobe with designs in versatile neutral colors is a good pathway. You can move into more seasonally specific styles like textured, heavier wool-based styles for colder months or cloths like seersucker or linen-blends for when it’s warmer. Add in some bolder colors and patterns (herringbone, windowpane, plaid, etc.) from there and you have a well-rounded collection for all seasons and settings. We’ve also been leaning heavily into knit styles over the past few seasons for a subtle hit of texture and seriously soft wear.
