The dedicated player knows that golf doesn’t have to have an offseason if you’re dressed properly. When the crowds thin out and the temperature dips, the course is a great escape. The shoulder seasons and typically defined “off-season” can be a really rewarding time to get out there. Conditions might not always be premier, but you can often play quickly in the peace and quiet of a less crowded course. A few rules of thumb, starting from the top. It might be time to have a wool beanie on hand in addition to your normal golf hat. On top, choose your layers wisely. Combining jackets, vests, sweaters and pullovers and long-sleeve polos lets you add warmth without bulk, and without compromising your mobility. It also lets you add and subtract, and often add again as the weather shifts. Add a trusted pair of five-pockets or trousers in the midweight category like the Brevard, a trusty pair of wool socks, and footwear with good water-resistance, and you’re right on track.
We think of our designs as anti-gimmick, but designed for high levels of function in the golf space. Many of our Crown Sport and Crown Crafted performance designs are still inspired by the original “Element 4” name of Crown Sport: solving for encounters with wind, water, cold and heat. There’s a variety of weights and insulations to tailor your gear to specific conditions. We develop quiet fabrics and matte finishes in our fabrics to avoid them being distracting, which you’ll notice from quarter-zips to pants like the Surge and eb66. The fabrics themselves tend to have a lot of stretch, but we’re also looking at the way the garments themselves are stitched and constructed to take mobility even further. Sometimes we’ll put a contrast fabric at the shoulders to protect against abrasion from shoulder straps. In styles like the Parks and Walker hybrid jackets, insulation is concentrated at the core while sleeves and sides are made with stretch-knit fabric to help you swing and move freely. You’ll even find our golf-inspired details in small things like double-zipper plackets on jackets and vests that let the garments “break” at the hem so they don’t bunch up and you can see the ball better at address.
To start, invest in some quality rainwear. If you have a set tee time and you’re planning to play no matter the weather, good waterproofs can mean the difference between having a great round and limping across the finish line. Look for 2.5 or 3-layer fabrics with seam-sealed designs (see: Rain Walker and Shield styles) and don’t skip the pants if there’s a chance you might need them. Technical/stretch layers, jackets and vests in a few weights pack down well and stash easily in your bag. We’re always partial to the original performance fabrics, too: Cashmere and Merino. A well-crafted sweater slides right into post-round meals too even if you don’t use it during your rounds. Fresh pants for everyday. At least two pairs of shoes. In short, pray for bluebird days and pack like you might need to play through a 3-club wind in sideways rain. Your travel bag could always use the extra padding around your clubs anyway.
